Lost the string

Lost the string, originally uploaded by monkeydoc.
This is an X-ray from a patient who has an IUD that was referred to a new OB/GYN because she couldn't find the string any longer. Take a look at the X-ray and see if you can figure it out!

I can't figure it out, and as the proud owner of an IUD, I am concerned. what happened? :)

Marc,

I had to click on the photo to take me to flickr, then click on the tiny "All Sizes" icon just above the image. It really helped me see the finding once the image was much bigger.

It's there contestants. Keep looking.

Fun game.

yeah, I see it, but why is it way up there? My knowledge of xrays is shitte. What is it supposed to look like?

well it's upside down and in the abdomen with the bowel instead of being in the uterus - it's eroded through.....

OMG. Does that mean the doctor put it in her bowel instead of in her uterus, or did it fall out and she re-inserted? So many things wrong with this picture. I saw it was upside down but I didn't know how the doctor could even do that, so I thought maybe I was wrong....

Wait... So I noticed the inversion, but how the hell could it erode all the way through tissue and get that high?!

IUDs work by creating an inflammatory state in the uterus that is hostile to a fertilized egg. It's a rare complication, but sometimes that inflammation eats through the whole wall of the uterus and allows the IUD to escape into the abdomen

Wow, um... now Kerry will be terrified!?

well. something to look forward to then. I, too, cannot "feel the string" (TMI for a blog?). My doctor said it was no big deal. I assume if it ends up in my bowel there will be some sort of symptoms :o
