Mardi Gras Wrapup

MDK-20090223-0396, originally uploaded by monkeydoc.

Mmmmm chargrilled oysters at the French Market on Decatur St. Probably one of the best meals that we had the whole time that we were in NOLA.

The drive home was a painful 13 hours - lacking the excitement that propelled us so quickly down to New Orleans.

Either Sunday or Monday starts another big trip for me - to Baltimore for a month of Informatics Bootcamp - stay tuned.

The party lost a little steam last night and the biggest part of the crew has headed back to Indiana. Walking down Bourbon street last night I stopped to read this sign. I was shocked and amazed at what was included, so much that I had to take a picture. Zoom it up and see just how much ignorance and intolerance can actually be possible on a 3 x 3 ft sign.

On a brighter note - I don't think that the signs and giant vinyl fencing crosses (lighter than the wooden ones - itself an interesting point) dimmed any of the sprits on the street.

The cold weather on the other hand did, hoping that future years are warmer :-)

Don't Judge a Street by it's Gutter.

MDK-20090222-0289, originally uploaded by monkeydoc.

Walking down bourbon street was definitely an experience. Especially because when I say "walking" I really mean moving forward about 2 inches per minute trying not to fall down and be trampled. The crowd is about as crazy as Black Friday at Wal-Mart.

For those of you who haven't been here the basic mechanism is this: there are balconies all along the street and people stand on them with lots and lots of beads. People throw beads down on the crowd. The cheap beads eventually end up here - in the gutter along with the rest of the garbage associated with extreme intoxication. The "nice" beads are usually exchanged for some type of exhibition, and I'm not talking about the state fair. Quite a few of the exhibitionists are people that I would give beads to keep their clothes on, but there are a few gems around.

More later :-)

Catchup post and visit from a friend

In this photo, Heather is modeling the new insulation that was put up in the garage a week ago. It's quite a bit warmer out there now, and we're both excited about the drywall and upcoming paint!

It was great to see Heather last night and catch up a bit even though it was short.

Something different

I always new there was something a little off in Colorado Springs, but robbing a convenience store with a Star Trek Klingon sword - link.
The trekkies would be ashamed, especially this one: Barbara Adams
